How to choose

These are practical questions to settle before ordering. Confirm exact specifications with the manufacturer or supplier.

1. What is the fence for?

Livestock, a field boundary and site security have different needs. Security uses may call for heavier wire or razor wire; check local rules on where barbed wire may be used.

2. Where will it stand?

Coastal, wet or industrial air corrodes steel faster. Ask about the coating type and thickness, and whether a zinc-aluminium or plastic coating suits the location.

3. How strong must it be?

Ask for the wire diameter and tensile strength, and for how far apart the barbs are. Closer barbs deter more strongly but cost more.

4. Does it meet a standard?

Ask which standard the product is made to, for example the European EN 10223 series for steel wire fencing products, and ask for the supplier's documentation.

5. Installation

Plan posts, tensioning and strainers. Wire should be tensioned correctly, and fences should be marked or placed so people and animals are not harmed by accident.
